Here's what she has to say......

"It's been awhile but I thought I'd drop you a wee line to let you know how I'm doing! I didn't go into museum design, but wanted to stay in museums, so I worked at the Glasgow Science Centre, and then I went on to Newcastle Uni to do my museum masters.

"After volunteering at the Transport Museum, I got a job at the new Riverside Museum in Glasgow, and then got a job at the National Museum of Scotland; I felt like I was following opening museums! I currently work in learning and programmes, developing and delivering the formal and informal programmes. It's a lot of fun and I still remember you (course tutors Pam and Geoff) both telling us all how museum design is all about telling stories, that is what is important, and even though I'm not in design it's still a principle I stick to; museums should be about interesting stories! I now specialise in storytelling, and dabble in puppetry too! Weird where life takes you!

"And I just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Lincoln, and even though I didn't go into design, I learnt so many things, pushed my limits, and couldn't have imagined doing a better course!

Glasgow’s well-loved Museum of Transport has relocated to this spectacular waterfront landmark (shown above) that was designed by internationally-renowned architect, Zaha Hadid. The Riverside Museum is her first major public building in the UK.

The dynamic new Riverside Museum displays Glasgow’s rich industrial heritage, which stems from the River Clyde. The Tall Ship is berthed alongside the Museum, creating a fantastic experience in this stunning setting.

Away with the Birds

Former Lincoln Product Design student, and now managing the 3D workshop in the University's Architecture Building, Kenny Cromar is proud to announce the opening of his exhibition Away with the Birds.

The exhibition is a celebration of photography and automated sculpture, exhibited in the surrealist style. Kenny explains "The photography on view was generally captured spontaneously, seen earlier as a flash of imagery in the corner of my eye. Conditions being just right at the time, provided an image that was so dramatic, it seemed surreal.

"I break photographic rules. I use longer than normal shutter speeds (generally hand held) to get as much light and colour into the frame before the image loses its sharpness. Directing the lens straight into the facing sun and not caring to much about depth of field, as the overall vista was usually more important.

The automated sculpture on show is deep and dark, exploring an emotional need to recreate the human form. I am now studying MA Design for Exhibition and Museums which is a postgraduate programme run by Dr Geoff Matthews in the Architecture building on the modern Brayford campus.

"The course involves research and design; you undertake three design projects in order to develop a strong and varied portfolio for interviews. Exhibition design can take many forms, museums, trade fairs, visitor centres, brand experiences, theme parks, world expos, even set design.

"The best part about designing any kind of exhibition is that you are basically telling a story through design. The reason I chose to do this particular masters is to make me more employable during these times of economic depression, being one of thousands of fine art graduates I found myself struggling to get a job and so opted to specialise in a design field in which there are still decent employment opportunities, and I got lucky because I’m also really enjoying the course.

For more information about this little known but succesful course, click on either of the following options: BA (Hons) or MA.

Visit the School of Architecture...in Lillestrom, Norway

Academic representatives from the Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design, will be present at the Norwegian Recruitment Fair this week in Lillestrom, Noway, as guests of Norwegian student recruitment agents, Across the Pond. Although this exhibition does not open until 9 December, the lead designer Gail Symington gave students a back stage tour and a valuable insight into the hands-on installation of exhibitions as well as their design.

On to the National Maritime Museums (NMM), where students were met by Alastair McCaw the Managing Director at Real Studios, who gave students a tour of the 'Voyagers' Gallery. Real Studios has recently designed this gallery which includes work by Light Surgeons. Students were then given an insight into how the museum works and other ongoing exhibitions by their Head of Exhibitions, Hugo van Maasakkers and the museum's Design Manager, Michael Martin.

A visit to Event Communications gave the opportunity for students to meet Lisa Martin who graduated from the course three years ago. Lisa joins a long line of Exhibition Alumni who have worked for this prestigious multinational company. Lisa was joined by her colleague and interpreter Alex Fitzsimmons for an illustrated talk on a recently opened exhibition about Robert Burns in Dumfries.

Without doubt the overall highlight of the week was the visit to the British Museum Design offices to meet previous DEM graduate Peter Macdermid who gave them a private tour to the new Grayson Perry exhibition. More importantly their Senior Designer Caroline Ingham launched the second year of our British Museum Internship. This opportunity will enable a current second year to work in the British Museum Design offices over the Easter holidays. Competitive in nature, this is a unique opportunity to work in probably the most famous museum in the world.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5680796417644179138" style="DISPLAY: block; The grand opening of the Wood Hall community building at Hill Holt Wood, an environmental social enterprise at Norton Disney on the Lincolnshire/Nottinghamshire border, took place on Saturday 17th September.

The development was officially opened by Lord Victor Adebowale CBE, Chief Executive of the national charity Turning Point and Chancellor of the University of Lincoln, in the presence of the Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, Mr Tony Worth, and the patron of Hill Holt Wood, Lady Neville.

The Wood Hall community building has already been recognised nationally as a fine example of self-sufficient, off-the-grid development. It was created using entirely sustainable materials, many of them sourced from the local areas, and incorporating the most innovative construction techniques available. Features include a rammed-earth circular conference room and double-reciprocal roof.

The blueprint of the design for the Wood Hall community building was developed by students within a third year undergraduate studio led by Dr Behzad Sodagar at Lincoln School of Architecture originally in 2006 as part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership. The design was further developed by the University and Hill Holt Wood in conjunction with local construction firm Simons Design Limited, and financial support from the environmental charity WREN. Construction was completed this year.

The project has won a string of national awards over recent years in recognition of its contribution to sustainability and environmental best practice, including honours at the Green Apple Awards, the Knowledge Transfer Partnership Awards and the Lord Stafford Awards.

Karen Lowthrop, CEO of Hill Holt Wood, said: "We are delighted to officially name and open the Wood Hall community building at Hill Holt Wood. The award-winning structure was designed and built using a number of innovative approaches to sustainable construction and will provide a unique focal point and resource for the local community in an ancient woodland setting. We would particularly like to thank WREN for their help in funding the development and Simons Design Limited and the University of Lincoln for the inspirational design work."

Dr Behzad Sodagar, Reader in Architecture and Co-Director of Centre for Architectural Research said: “Seeing a blueprint created by our students becomes a reality in the shape of the Wood Hall community building has been very inspiring to our staff and students. The exercise demonstrated the effectiveness of research engaged teaching in architectural education. We’re very proud to have played a role in the pioneering work taking place in Hill Holt Wood over the last few years.”

International Office special prizegiving event

Students and staff were treated to a wonderfully colourful start to Diwali, the Indian festival of lights, at the special prizegiving last week, given by the International Office at the University's EMMTEC centre, as seen below.

International students who are currently studying across the University had spent many hours rehearsing for the evening, which included South Asian dance performances, both individually, and as a group for a "Bollywood" type routine, with help from Indian tutor Meenakshi Mandhar of the School of Architecture, who led the coregraphy for the performance.

Many of the performers wore traditional dress, adding authencity to the evening. He told us "The University of Lincoln was my first choice because I was told about the benefits of studying here with friendly people and moderate cost of living. I am from a town called Kluang in Malaysia which is about 6500 miles from UK. I am planning to gain some work experience hopefully in UK before furthering my study after completing this course. So far, I am doing well with all the things here and I believe it will always be so."

Another recipient of the Vice Chancellor's prize was Kimberley Drabyk from Canada (pictured below, again with Mary Stuart) who is currently studying on MA Design for Exhibition & Museums.

Kimberley chose this course was because she comes from a museum and fine arts background and this course puts both these areas together. Kim says "This course is living up to all of my expectations and more. I choose the University of Lincoln because it is the only one that offers my program. I am from New Westminster, Canada which is the oldest city in western Canada, first becoming a city in 1858. My career aspiration is to become a exhibition designer".

Shilpa Sara John from India (shown below) and who has just started studies on the new MA Interior Architecture and Design was awarded Faculty Champion, and presented her prize by new Senior Academic Anne Chick. Shilpa told us "I’m currently pursuing my Masters in Interior Architecture and Design I chose the University of Lincoln because of its reputation of a growing modern university, not only in the country, but internationally as well.

"As of now, it has met all my expectations. I come from Kerala, India. Being so far from home, the University has helped me settle in well with the friendly and helpful faculty. After my course, I wish to gain some good work experience and I aspire to be a successful Interior Architect".

The evening closed with a delicious Indian buffet and a chance for international students to mix with staff and other students. From studying day and night at uni, to graduating in Lincoln Cathedral, my final year project being nominated for the RIBA Bronze President’s Medal and finally what it was like to ‘up sticks’ and move to Germany, working at one of my favourite Architectural Studios, Bolles + Wilson GmbH in Münster Germany.

My third year at University was my favourite so far. I was in James' and Bezhad’s Response Studio, where we predominantly worked at creating a thorough foundation of knowledge into an area and used this as a basis for an intelligent (or at least aiming for an intelligent) response to the areas weaknesses, strengths and possible opportunities. Be it social, political, economical, architectural, dare I say it…sustainable. The list goes on. It was really interesting to learn the importance of how these separate aspects worked together, or at least could work together as a series of inter correlating limbs. Treating the environment as a list of processes and actions, it seemed to mirror modern machinery in the same way, how different parts of a tool or machine work together simultaneously to create an end result. This was what became the focus of my project.

Anyway, I finished my third year project and subsequently found out that it was nominated for the RIBA Bronze President’s Medal, which being an avid fan of the work that gets nominated every year, it was the perfect end to my time at Lincoln. However, it also meant I could not easily just switch off from the project and that I had another 3 months to think/question it and play around with it. Which as the summer went on, I realised was harder than expected as other things seem to take over. Early September it was finally submitted and the results are posted late October I believe, so keep an eye out.

Whilst all this was going on I had moved home, settled into a new life in a country where I didn’t know the language, started my first architectural job and graduated. I worked hard throughout my third year to balance my project work and dissertation with endless amounts of job applications and portfolio changes. This fortunately paid off when I was offered a position at Bolles + Wilson in May. I moved to Germany in late July and started at Bolles + Wilson on 1st August.
[Offices of Bolles + Wilson in Münster, Germany]

It is now October and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far. I work closely with Peter Wilson and the team here in Münster, predominantly on competition projects. This could mean anything from CAD drawings to creating schematic diagrams, presentations and most importantly being told my English humour does not seem to translate over the pond!

Other than the endless hours strapped to the computer and drinking coffee, it’s great just to meet people from all over the world and see how things are different in another country and city. Being on ‘The Continent’ it is rude not to explore it a bit as the trains and busses and even something called “Mitfahrgelegenheit” (which is kind of like planned hitchhiking). It is so easy to do so and you can be any number of interesting countries in only a few hours. For example a few of us from the office are off to Berlin this weekend to explore the culture over there… mainly the party culture, but that is beside the point.

Anyway, I am seeming to waffle on like I have always done, to the expense of tutors Jane Lomholt, Andy Earl or Carl O’Coil who were forced to read my take on English grammar. So, I will just say to all of you out there that are looking for jobs and experience, to consider looking to other places than your home town and 'The Big Smoke'. As there are lots of great opportunities out there all over the world so why not use your aspiring career as an excuse to see some of it.

Tschüss
David
http://www.davidmcgowan.co.uk/

RIBA President Medals - Student shortlisted

Sam Brown, one of our current third year students on BA (Hons) Architecture, is in with a strong chance for the RIBA President's Bronze Medals having just been shortlisted for the award.

Sam's project is among the final 10 projects out of 101 nominations from 300 schools of architecture in over 60 countries. Manifested in the intersecting relationships between notions of region, geophysical terrain, landscape, topography and architectural space, this development has contributed to an emerging field of enquiry. We see this for example in the deployment of geographical techniques and terminologies in architectural and urban design, and the appropriation (or transformation) of traditional architectural concepts (such as scale and proportion) to a matrix of spatio-temporal relationships.
Running now for over 60 years, this programme has forged an international network of designers, specialised in the design of exhibition space, trade shows, such as the above Motor show, international expositions, as well as museums which are becoming increasingly interactive and exciting. Theatre set design as well as arena and festival concert design are also possible outlets for graduates in this design specialism.

Graduates of DEM have gone on to work for global organisations such as Event Communication, Haughton Kneale Design, and even Merlin Entertainments, whose brands include Alton Towers, Legoland, Sealife, and Madame Tussauds. The intensive course was run in conjunction with Dr Ahmed Elseragy, Dean of International Network and Affairs from the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport, London International Office, which operates under the League of Arab States.

Senior Lecturer in Architecture Dr Amira Elnokaly, who was instrumental in setting up the course, said: “Lincoln is an ideal city in which to study architecture and the built environment. As an urban campus in a small and compact city, students have the benefit of easy access to the historic centre with its many amenities.

“There has been an emphasis on the contemporary and historical, learning by doing and practical problem solving. The course has been a real success and we look forward to next year’s.”
During the students’ stay they took part in field trips, lectures, seminars and studio projects and were taught by architects, conservators, historians, academics and researchers with varied cultural and international backgrounds. A break from the intensive learning was an excursion to the New Art Exchange - Nottingham’s first dedicated cultural facility for Black contemporary arts, where they relaxed, enjoyed Eastern cuisine and entertained each other with music from the various countries.
